In terms of architectural beauty, few Cretan resorts can compare to Rethymno, and the city’s 20-kilometer sandy beach has virtually no competition. Booking a tour to Rethymno is a great choice for all types of travelers — from families with children to nightlife enthusiasts.
General Information
Located on the coast of the Cretan Sea, the city boasts a long and fascinating history. Founded in the 4th century BC, Rethymno has seen Byzantine, Turkish, and Venetian rule, each of which left unique monuments behind. Today, Rethymno is a popular tourist hub and the capital of the region bearing the same name.
Climate
Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, Rethymno enjoys a long, hot summer: as early as May, the air warms up to +25 °C and the sea to +22... +23 °C. From July to September, average air temperatures reach +28... +30 °C, and the sea — +27 °C. The swimming season lasts through the end of October.
Beach
The city’s large beach area can be divided into several parts. The most crowded is the city beach, flanked by piers on both sides. Here, tourists enjoy calm waters, a gentle sea entrance, playgrounds, sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as activities like jet skiing and parasailing. For its cleanliness and environmental standards, the beach has been awarded the Blue Flag, and many consider it the best on Crete. It’s especially popular with families. Those seeking more privacy and waves head to the beach section beyond the marina and fortress.
There are also many great beaches near the city. Among them: Panormos, popular with sailing enthusiasts; the small Gerani beach, a favorite of local fishermen; and Adelianos Kampos, ideal for family holidays.
Entertainment
Despite the excellent beach, Rethymno is not a resort where sunbathing and swimming are the only options. Strolling through the city’s picturesque Venetian-style streets, shopping in boutiques, and dining in countless tavernas bring just as much joy. For young people, nightlife in Rethymno revolves around the clubs and discos on Igoumenou Gavriil Street. Must-see landmarks include the Fortezza fortress (with the archaeological museum nearby), Rimondi Fountain, the port, the cathedral, the Venetian Loggia, and the Turkish mosques.
Rethymno is also a great destination for educational tourism, as it provides easy access to daily excursions in the surrounding area: 20–50 km away are the Arkadi and Preveli monasteries, Lake Kournas, Sfendoni Cave, Frangokastello Fortress, and many other cultural and natural attractions.
