Tourist guide in Tanzania
As of February 14, 2021, the government of Tanzania has enforced public dress code regulations for tourists. These rules apply in all public areas outside of hotel and beach zones.
Prohibited clothing includes:
- Revealing or transparent clothing;
- Short skirts or shorts (above the knee);
- Crop tops that expose the stomach;
- Swimsuits and beachwear outside the beach/hotel premises.
Clothing should modestly cover the shoulders, stomach, and knees when in public places such as towns, villages, and markets.
Penalties: Violation may lead to a fine starting from USD 2,000 or imprisonment for up to 5 years.
Since May 1, 2025, the authorities in Zanzibar have actively enforced these rules. Hotels and tour guides are required to inform tourists about dress expectations.
The goal of this regulation is to promote respectful tourism and preserve Zanzibar’s cultural and religious values.
Ramadan is the Islamic holy month of fasting and reflection. In Tanzania (including Zanzibar), where a large portion of the population is Muslim, special etiquette is expected from visitors.
During Ramadan, tourists are advised to:
- Not eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours (especially in towns and villages);
- Avoid loud conversations, arguments, or offensive behavior in public;
- Refrain from public displays of affection such as kissing or hugging.
Note: Restaurants and cafes outside hotels may remain closed during the day. Hotel restaurants may operate with limited service. It is recommended to plan meals accordingly.
