Bahrain owes its growing popularity among tourists to a unique blend of exotic charm and modern comfort. Ancient forts, blooming oases, and desert sands exist side by side with sleek hotels, pristine beaches, and sprawling malls. A holiday in Bahrain offers a chance to unwind by the Gulf while experiencing an authentic local culture — all without stepping too far out of your comfort zone. This Muslim kingdom is known for its relatively liberal atmosphere, making it especially welcoming to international travelers.
General Information
This ancient kingdom is located on an archipelago in the Persian Gulf. The capital, Manama, lies on Bahrain Island — the largest of the group. Arabic is the official language, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas. While Islam is the state religion, alcohol is not strictly prohibited and can be purchased in licensed venues. The country boasts a high standard of living and excellent safety levels. Bahrain’s main international airport is just 7 km from the capital, making direct flights from New Delhi easy and convenient — the journey takes less than six hours.
Bahrain’s most popular resort areas — Manama, Al Budaiya, and Muharraq — offer outstanding hotel infrastructure. Many of the country’s top 5-star properties — including the Four Seasons, Diplomat Radisson, and Ritz-Carlton — are located in the capital, but premium getaways can also be found outside the city. In Zallaq, for instance, the luxurious Sofitel Bahrain features a unique thalassotherapy center. Most hotels offer private beaches, pools, spas, kids’ clubs, gyms, restaurants, and cafés. Travelers can choose between full-service 5-star resorts — some of which operate on an all-inclusive basis — and more budget-friendly 3- and 4-star options, which reduce the cost of tours from New Delhi.
With its abundance of malls and boutiques, Bahrain is also a shopper’s paradise. And for travelers interested in culture and history, the country offers a rich array of landmarks and natural wonders to explore.
Climate
Although beach holidays are possible almost year-round, the best times to visit Bahrain are in spring and autumn. From early March to mid-May and from late September to late November, the weather is pleasantly warm: daytime temperatures range from 23–29°C, while the sea varies from 21–30°C. Summers, however, are very hot, with air temperatures reaching 40°C and sea temperatures up to 33°C. In winter, the air cools to 19–22°C, and the sea to 18–19°C; skies are often cloudy and strong winds are common. This makes winter ideal for cultural and sightseeing trips.
Leisure and Recreation
Bahrain's beaches are known for their well-kept sandy shores, shallow waters, and stunning scenery. Hotel beaches are especially well-equipped, but public ones also offer good infrastructure — including sun loungers, umbrellas, restrooms, water sports rentals, cafés, and snack bars.
Some of the top beaches in Bahrain include:
- Marassi: The most popular beach in both Manama and Bahrain as a whole, known for its calm waters (thanks to wave breakers) and a wide range of activities — from parties and picnics to kayaking and beach volleyball.
- Coral Bay: A luxurious private beach in Manama with a pool, Coral Bay is famous for its water sports — diving, yachting, jet skiing — and for hosting parties with renowned DJs.
- Jazaer: Bahrain’s largest beach, located in Zallaq near a nature reserve. Exceptionally clean, it features children’s play areas and several cafés, making it a top choice for families despite its distance from the capital.
- Budaiya Beach Park: A well-equipped beach in Al Budaiya, perfect for both kids and adults. With shops and market stalls nearby, it’s also a great spot for casual shopping.
- Al Dar Island Beach: A small yet cozy beach on Al Dar Island where visitors can lounge in tents or pavilions, or enjoy water skiing, jet skiing, and boat rides.
In addition to swimming and sunbathing, Bahrain’s beaches offer many other unique activities. Chief among them is pearl diving — a truly local experience where you can search for oysters and potentially find a real pearl inside. No special skills are needed, as oysters are found in shallow waters. For fans of traditional diving, the Persian Gulf reveals coral reefs, exotic fish, and even shipwrecks and submerged aircraft.
Other leisure options include desert jeep safaris, horseback rides, camel treks, golfing, and even falconry. Those drawn to architecture and history will enjoy exploring Bahrain’s diverse landmarks — from the 5,000-year-old ruins of Qal’at al-Bahrain to the forts of Arad and Riffa, the Al-Fateh and Al-Khamis mosques, the World Trade Center, and King Fahd Causeway. Equally impressive are Bahrain’s natural attractions, like the Tree of Life and the Al Areen Wildlife Park. And of course, one of the country’s biggest draws is the Formula 1 Grand Prix — a must-see for motorsport fans, many of whom plan their entire trip around this iconic event.
Bahrain is home to the famous Formula 1 circuit where the Bahrain Grand Prix takes place. Built in the Sakhir Desert and named after it, this iconic racetrack offers world-class conditions for flawless racing and boasts a massive grandstand for spectators. Visitors can even take a guided tour of the facility!
